A259 Current Cycle Safety Conditions.

The main reason that Highways England is making improvements to the Cycle Path alongside the A259 is to address the current cycle safety conditions. As of August, 2020, 5 of the 12 sections of the A259, between Emsworth and Chichester, have scored critical fails. The table on this page is from the WSP feasibility study report presented to Highways England. All links have been scored out of 100. Routes with an overall total of less than 40% are considered to have a ‘low’ level of service. Those between 40 and 70% an ‘improved’ level of service. Scores above 70% represents ‘good’ provision for cycling.

CRITICAL FAIL MEANS THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO CYCLISTS.

Emsworth to Southbourne – CRITICAL FAIL.

Southbourne, Stein Road to Farm Lane – CRITICAL FAIL.

Farm Lane to Broad Road – CRITICAL FAIL.

Broad Road to Cutmill Creek – CRITICAL FAIL.

Hillier Garden Centre to Salthill Road – CRITICAL FAIL.

We highly recommend that all drivers, cyclists and pedestrians exercise extreme caution.
